Inspired by Istanbul. DesignNation for Kohl’s, featuring Narciso Rodriguez.


In 2012 Kohl’s launched DesignNation with a capsule collection by Narciso Rodriguez. I wrote a positioning statement for the pitch that explained why Istanbul was the perfect catalyst for the collection, and why the partnership was perfect for Kohl’s. After he read the statement, Narciso asked if he could hire me. It might have been a rhetorical question, but I did get to go to Istanbul to capture the story and chronicle the design process. 

There’s a reason they call Istanbul the “City of the World’s Desire.” Istanbul has always possessed an intoxicating alchemy of history and modernity; exquisite art and casual joie de vivre. So it is fitting that a designer whose work at once transcends time and is of the moment should find inspiration in this ageless place. And even more fitting that a designer who believes that fashion should be approachable and wearable should partner with a store that makes it affordable.
